Foreign Exchange Rates Increase Sony Pictures Q1 Loss

Home Media Magazine reports that the strong theatrical performance of The Angry Birds Movie wasn’t enough to offset foreign currency fluctuation as Sony Pictures saw a first-quarter (ended June 30) operating loss of $98 million, compared with an operating loss of $96.4 million during the previous-year period. Revenue increased to $1.69 billion, from $1.41 billion.

“The main reason for the operating results ‘improvement’ was a decrease in the Japanese-yen based operating loss amount resulting from the appreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar,” Sony Corp. CFO Kenichiro Yoshida said in a presentation.

Indeed, Sony revised downward fiscal-year forecasts for sales and operating income due to the appreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar.  Meanwhile, Sony Pictures said revenue from media networks, which includes television and digital networks worldwide, increased primarily due to higher advertising in India and Latin America.

Angry Birds has generated $344.4 million at the global box office, including $106.7 million domestically. The movie was released digitally July 29 and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Aug. 16.

Willie Nelson reveals "For the Good Times A Tribute to Ray Price" Album

Legacy Recordings, the catalog music division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Willie Nelson's latest album, For The Good Times: A Tribute To Ray Price, on Friday, September 16.Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Willie Nelson's latest album, For The Good Times: A Tribute To Ray Price, on Friday, September 16th.  On his new album, Willie has teamed up with a pair of longtime friends--producer Fred Foster and conductor/arranger Bergen White--who, like Nelson, are American country music veterans with deep connections to the legendary Ray Price. Foster and White worked together to complete Ray Price's final album, Beauty Is..., at Nashville's Ocean Way Studios, where Willie Nelson has returned to create the magic of For The Good Times: A Tribute To Ray Price.

For The Good Times: A Tribute To Ray Price celebrates the wide-reaching impact and influence of Ray Price on American pop and country music, from Price's hallmark lush orchestral arrangements (presaging "countrypolitan") to the patented "Ray Price Shuffle," the groundbreaking 4/4 walking bass line which transformed honky-tonk and country-western swing music in 1950s on hits like "Crazy Arms."

Providing musical backup for Willie on six of the album's tracks--"Invitation To The Blues," "Heartaches By The Numbers," "Crazy Arms," "City Lights," "I'll Be There" and "Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me"--Willie is joined by The Time Jumpers, the Grammy-nominated Western Swing dream team comprised of Vince Gill (electric and acoustic guitar, harmony vocals), Andy Reiss (electric guitar), Larry Franklin (fiddle), Joe Spivey (fiddle), Kenny Sears (fiddle), Brad Albin (bass), Billy Thomas (drums), Jeff Taylor (piano and accordion), Paul Franklin (pedal steel) and Willie's Family Band harmonica player Mickey Raphael.

Bruce Springsteen sets Chapter and Verse album release pre-autobiography publishing

Chapter and Verse,' the audio companion to Bruce Springsteen's extraordinary forthcoming autobiography, will be released Sept. 23 on Columbia Records. The career-spanning compilation will be released four days before Simon & Schuster publishes 'Born to Run.' Five of the album's 18 tracks have not been previously released.

Springsteen selected the songs on 'Chapter and Verse' to reflect the themes and sections of 'Born to Run.' The compilation begins with two tracks from The Castiles, featuring a teenaged Springsteen on guitar and vocals, and ends with the title track from 2012's 'Wrecking Ball.' The collected songs trace Springsteen's musical history from its earliest days, telling a story that parallels the one in the book.

Recordings from Steel Mill and The Bruce Springsteen Band feature musicians who would go on to play in The E Street Band. Solo demos of "Henry Boy" and "Growin' Up" were cut in 1972 shortly before Springsteen began recording his debut album, 'Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.'

'Chapter and Verse' will be available as a single CD and double LP. The package will include lyrics and rare photos. 'Chapter & Verse' will be available for preorder on Friday, July 29.

PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing the critically acclaimed British crime drama “THE TUNNEL” on DVD and Blu-ray. “THE TUNNEL” from the makers of the Broadchurch series is set against the backdrop of Europe in crisis. The case takes a surreal turn when a shocking discovery is made at the crime scene, forcing the French and British police into an uneasy partnership. As the serial killer uses ever more elaborate and ingenious methods to highlight the moral bankruptcy of modern society, Karl and Elise are drawn deeper into his increasingly personal agenda.

Gucci Mane's back with "Everybody's Looking"

Atlantic recording artist Gucci Mane has announced today’s release of his hugely anticipated new album. “EVERYBODY LOOKING” – the iconic rapper’s first studio album in half a decade – is available now.

“EVERYBODY LOOKING” was recorded in Atlanta over six days immediately following Gucci’s early release from prison last May. Due to an overwhelming response from his fans on the release of “1st Day Out Tha Feds,” Gucci decided to surprise supporters with a brand new album he recorded while on home confinement. The album is produced by Mike WiLL Made-It (Future, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign) and Zaytoven (Usher, Nicki Minaj), with additional production from Murda Beatz (Migos, Young Thug), Marz & Swae Lee (Rae Sremmurd, Beyoncé), Pluss (Beyoncé, Rae Sremmurd), Will A Fool (Future, Drake), and multiple GRAMMY Award nominee Christopher “Drumma Boy” Gholson (see attached tracklisting).

Among the countless highlights of “EVERYBODY LOOKING” is the new track, “Guwop Home (Feat. Young Thug),” available now. The track is joined by a colorful companion video, streaming now at Gucci’s official YouTube channel.

“Guwop Home (Feat. Young Thug)” received a slew of attention upon its release earlier this month, including notice from Pitchfork, MTV News, and Rolling Stone, which praised the track’s video for “(boasting) an overload of bikinis, producer Mike WiLL Made-It jamming out on his MPC poolside, stacks of cash and a scantily clad night soccer game, all to commemorate the release of the Trap God.”

In support of Gucci Mane’s highly anticipated release, Spotify and the legendary rapper have joined forces to build a one-of-a-kind multi-platform marketing campaign around the launch. Spotify and Gucci are giving hip-hop fans unprecedented access to exclusive video content that gives them an inside look into his life and the making of "EVERYBODY LOOKING."

“I’ve had the concept for this album in my mind for years,” Gucci states. “The reception from my fans has been so overwhelming, that I knew I had to do something different for this release. I did not want to roll out this project the traditional way. I wanted to partner with Spotify to do something innovative and groundbreaking.”

Additionally, Spotify will speak directly with Gucci fans through social media takeovers, custom playlists and more. This partnership lets Gucci engage with his rabid fan base and reach millions of new fans around the world.

Gucci celebrated the arrival of “EVERYBODY LOOKING” with “Gucci Mane & Friends,” his first full-scale live performance since his release, last Friday nite in Atlanta, GA’s world renowned Fox Theatre. The star-studded concert extravaganza – had see the Trap God joined by an array of surprise special guests – was live streamed exclusively online through Revolt TV

“EVERYBODY LOOKING” was preceded by a number of hugely popular track releases, including “Back On Road (Gucci Mane & Drake),” the Drumma Boy-produced “All My Children,” “No Sleep (Intro),” and “1st Day Out Tha Feds. The latter track proved a true pop phenomenon, earning close to 1 million SoundCloud plays within the first 12 hours of its May 27th release.

Widely ranked among the most gifted rappers of his generation, Gucci has been incredibly productive since his long incarceration; this highlighted in a major profile piece in the New York Times to run in this upcoming Sunday’s paper. Some of Gucci’s major moves since release include performing at a sold out “Welcome Home Party” at Atlanta’s Mansion Elan, appearing in a recent promo video for SUPREME, and contributing to the blockbuster new single, “Champions,” performed by Kanye West, Gucci Mane, Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Travis Scott, Yo Gotti, Quavo & Desiigner; and announcing his new Delantic clothing line, with complete details to be revealed soon. As if that weren’t enough, Gucci was further greeted upon release with news of three new RIAA gold sales certifications for his classic 2009 album, “THE STATE VS. RADRIC DAVIS’ and its two hit singles, “Wasted” and “Spotlight (Feat. Usher).”

Despite this, Nia and Silas can’t help noticing a growing attraction between them, leading them to a forbidden relationship — at first tentative, but then exploding into a passionate romance. As suspicion begins to mount among their superiors, the couple will be forced to choose between going back to the safety of the lives they have always known, or risking it all to try and pull off a daring escape.

Listten- Head and the Heart's new single- "Library Magic"

Today, The Head and the Heart reveal the second single from their forthcoming album Signs Of Light. "Library Magic" was released recently. "Library Magic" is the follow up to the previously released single, "All We Ever Knew,"  which debuted last month and is already in the top 5 at AAA, and #18 this week on the #Alternative chart. Signs of Light will be released on September 9th  via Warner Bros. Records.

"Library Magic," which was written by band member Charity Thielen, could almost be seen as a letter to the other five members, acknowledging the ups-and-downs of life in a successful band while celebrating the unique and constantly evolving bond between them. "I wrote that song after having our first real time off as a band," she says. "It touches on the storied relationships between band members trying to survive living in a van off of accelerated time and gas station crafts for years straight, but it also applies to any of life's relationships."

Very excited to share our song, Library Magic, with you! It is very special to us and touches on the important reminder for the quotidien, "there will always be better days."

Hope it finds a special resonance in your life too.

Nina Simone Documentary to get September dvd, bd, cd release!

Nominated for the Academy Award for Best #Documentary at the 2016 Oscars, Best Music Film at the 2016 Grammy Awards, and winning Best Documentary at the American Film Institute Awards in 2016, documentary film What Happened, Miss Simone? connected with critics and fans alike with its deep examination of the legendary Nina Simone. On September 2, 2016, Eagle Rock Entertainment will present this film as a DVD+CD and Blu-ray+CD with additional bonus interviews not included in the main film. [MSRP $26.98 Blu-ray+CD, $21.98 DVD+CD]

What Happened, Miss Simone? is the story of Nina Simone’s life and career. Through archive interview and extensive performance footage, alongside new interviews with family, friends and colleagues, the film paints a fascinating portrait of this complex and challenging artist.

Nina Simone was many things: pianist, singer, songwriter, performer, civil rights campaigner, wife and mother, victim of abuse, and black icon. Growing up in the segregated American South, she began to learn piano at age 4, attended the Juilliard School Of Music in New York and aspired to a career as a concert pianist. Thwarted in this, allegedly because of her color, she began to play in nightclubs to earn money and her career as a jazz and blues performer was born. The film follows Nina Simone through the sixties and her intense involvement in the civil rights movement, her decision to relocate to first Africa and then Europe in the early seventies, her emotional difficulties in the eighties, and her later years in France in the nineties.

Take a stand against gun violence, with the new organization, Artists for Safe Kids

Hundreds of creators of visual, literary and performing arts for children are taking a stand against gun violence, joining a new organization, Artists for Safe Kids (www.artistsforsafekids.org). ASK joins a growing number of organizations calling for stronger gun laws and safety measures. Many ASK members will join with Concert Across America To End Gun Violence on September 25th, a Congress-designated National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.

The idea for Artists for Safe Kids (ASK) began shortly after the Sandy Hook school massacre in December 2012. Over GRAMMY weekend in Los Angeles in February 2013, GRAMMY winner and author Bill Harley delivered an address, “How Shall We Speak”, to a children’s music industry audience, which he later posted online. Now director of ASK, Harley explains, “As artists, writers and performers who work with and for children, we have witnessed with growing concern and despair the tragic effect of gun violence on children. Some of us are gun owners, some of us have never touched a gun. What unites us is our recognition that our nation needs a saner, more rational gun policy, nationally and in our local states and communities.”

Among the supporters are Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey (Peter Paul and Mary), and GRAMMY winners Cathy & Marcy, Dan Zanes and The Okee Dokee Brothers, plus authors Norton Juster (Phantom Tollbooth), Lemony Snicket, Mo Willems, Sharon Creech and Jane Yolen. More artists are adding their support daily. (List available online at http://www.artistsforsafekids.org/about.html)

Donna Dees, founder and organizer of the Million Mom March, Mother's Day 2000 –  still the largest protest against gun violence in U.S. history – is an early supporter. Dees is also involved in producing the Concert Across America To End Gun Violence on September 25th.  Dees says, “I'm impressed with the variety and the quality of the artists involved in ASK. This new organization will spark awareness and action toward a saner gun policy. It’s so important for artists to take a stand on this issue, and to engage their fans in this ongoing effort.

ASK joins with a growing chorus of voices calling for comprehensive universal background checks for gun purchasers, better screening for mental health problems, better gun safety regulations for gun owners to keep children safe from accidental firings, and a limit on semi-automatic weapons and large magazines. Artists who wish to show their support for a safer world for kids may join the organization and receive tips for organizing a concert on September 25 by sending an email to ASK at info@artistsforsafekids.org.

THE INFILTRATOR - Original Motion Picture Score Out on CD July 22, 2016

Lakeshore Records will release THE INFILTRATOR - Original Motion Picture Score on CD July 22, 2016. The album features the original score by Chris Hajian (LADDIE, FIRST POSITION, THE TAKE).
“I wanted to create a very captivating score, and one that puts an emotional depth into the film in a powerful yet nuanced way,” Mr Hajian recently said. “This combination of 80s synths, modern ambient textures and string melodies is one that I believe captures the time and emotion of the story and draws you into the world of Bob Musella.”

Based on a true story, federal agent Robert “Bob” Mazur  (Bryan Cranston) goes deep undercover to infiltrate Pablo Escobar’s drug trafficking scene plaguing the nation in 1986 by posing as slick, money-laundering businessman Bob Musella. Teamed with impulsive and streetwise fellow agent Emir Abreu (John Leguizamo) and Kathy Ertz (Diane Kruger), a rookie agent posing as his fiancé, Mazur befriends Escobar’s top lieutenant Roberto Alcaino (Benjamin Bratt). Navigating a vicious criminal network in which the slightest slip-up could cost him his life, Mazur risks it all building a case that leads to indictments of more than 100 drug lords and the corrupt bankers who cleaned their dirty money, along with the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, one of the largest money-laundering banks in the world.

“For me, Chris puts tremendous heart and emotion into the score,” says director Brad Furman.  “Every time we have made a movie, the end result is a deeper, richer, fuller experience with clarity of characters.”

Deep Purple's "Live at the NEC" out on DVD in September

On September 14, 2002, hard rock pioneers Deep Purple took the stage for a landmark concert at the NEC in Birmingham, England to bid farewell to founding member and keyboard legend Jon Lord.

On August 26, Eagle Rock Entertainment will deliver this very concert with the release of Live At The NEC on DVD and Digital formats [MSRP $14.99]. Previously only available as part of the Around The World Live boxed set, this film is being made available for the first time as a standalone DVD.
One of the most emotional concerts in Deep Purple’s long career, Live At The NEC is a unique experience in that it features both their keyboard players on stage – Jon Lord and Don Airey. Lord had announced his retirement earlier that year, and Airey was subsequently brought on board. Airey serves as the principal keyboardist throughout the show, culminating in a solo before the lights drop, and Jon Lord appears for a storming version of “Perfect Strangers.” The two share keyboard duties for the rest of the night, in a fitting passing-of-the-torch moment.

At 109 minutes total, Deep Purple (Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Steve Morse, Ian Paice, Lord and Airey) kick out all the classics: “Smoke On The Water,” “Woman From Tokyo,” “Space Truckin’,” “Highway Star,” “Speed King,” “Lazy,” “Hush,” and more. In addition to this fantastic set, Live At The NEC includes bonus interviews with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover.

OST from Woody Allen's Cafe Society Out Now

Sony Classical released the original soundtrack for Woody Allen’s CAFÉ SOCIETY on CD on July 8, 2016. The soundtrack includes a great compliation of the music from the 1930’s, largely from the Rodgers and Hart, chosen by Allen and featured prominently in the film. The album includes original performances by Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks as well as the on-screen performance of “Mountain Greenery” with Sony Music Masterworks recording artist Kat Edmonson.

Set in the 1930s, Woody Allen’s bittersweet romance CAFÉ SOCIETY follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centering on events in the lives of Bobby’s colorful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age. With CAFÉ SOCIETY, Woody Allen conjures up a 1930s world that has passed to tell a deeply romantic tale of dreams that never die.

The film opened the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews and is scheduled for wide release July 15. Allen becomes the first and only director to have three opening night films selected for the Cannes Film Festival (HOLLYWOOD ENDING opened in Cannes in 2002 and MIDNIGHT IN PARIS in 2011).

“The soundtrack consists of music from the 1930s, since that’s when the picture takes place,” Allen stated. “Most of the material is Rodgers and Hart, who are very dominant in those years, and have that bittersweet romantic quality that defines the spirit of the movie itself.”

The success of CAFÉ SOCIETY wouldn’t be complete without the partnership of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Lorenz Hart. Rodgers and Hart were an American songwriting duo that worked together on 28 stage musicals and more than 500 songs. From 1936 to 1943, the duo wrote a series of Broadway musical comedies, each of which seemed to top the one before in terms of innovation and box office success. ON YOUR TOES (1936), BABES IN ARMS (1937), I'D RATHER BE RIGHT (1937), I MARRIED AN ANGEL (1938), THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE (1938), TOO MANY GIRLS (1939), HIGHER AND HIGHER (1940), PAL JOEY (1940), and BY JUPITER (1942) dazzled Broadway in spectacular succession, and collectively offered such classic songs as "There's A Small Hotel," "I Wish I Were In Love Again," "My Funny Valentine," "Where Or When," "The Lady Is A Tramp," "Spring Is Here," "Falling In Love With Love," "Sing For Your Supper," "This Can't Be Love," "I Didn't Know What Time It Was," "It Never Entered My Mind," "Bewitched," "I Could Write A Book," "Nobody's Heart," and "Wait Till You See Her."

Campy and Delightfully Decadent Comedy-horror THERAPY FOR A VAMPIRE Arrives on DVD in September

THERAPY FOR A VAMPIRE,  an uproariously funny, deliciously campy and delightfully decadent comedy-horror film from Austrian writer/director David Ruehm arrives on DVD in September from Music Box.

THERAPY FOR A VAMPIRE spins the creepily comic tale of Count von Kozsnom (Tobias Moretti), a vampire in 1930s Vienna who, trapped in an eternally long marriage to the Countess Elsa von Kozsnom (Jeanette Hain), has lost his thirst for life. After seeking out marriage counseling from the legendary Dr. Sigmund Freud (Karl Fischer), The Count, in an effort to appease his vain wife’s desire to see her own reflection, commissions a portrait of her by his assistant Viktor (Dominic Oley), an aspiring painter. But it’s Viktor’s headstrong girlfriend Lucy (Cornelia Ivancan) who most intrigues The Count, convinced that she’s the reincarnation of his one true love. It doesn’t take too long for a wave of mistaken identities and misplaced affections to envelop the hapless group.

A cleverly crafted undead outing as well as a romantic mix-up comedy, THERAPY FOR A VAMPIRE truly pierces the jugular as it pays homage to the glorious history of vampire films, while taking relentless stabs at psycho-therapy, relationships and the very notion of the vow “Till Death Do Us Part.”

Ghostbuster (2016) Original Score CD Out Now!

Sony Classical has announced the release of Ghostbusters 2016 (Original Motion Picture Score) to accompany Sony Pictures’ feature film Ghostbusters, now in theaters. Featuring a score by multi-award winning composer Theodore Shapiro, the album is available now on CD, as of July 15.

Theodore Shapiro saw Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981 as a nine-year old boy, and afterwards was certain of two things: one - he wanted to be an archaeologist, and two - he couldn’t stop thinking about the music. His plans to be an archaeologist eventually faded, but his interest in film composition did not. He went on to study music, write a musical about a cryogenically frozen head, and play in a neo-disco band called God at Brown University, and then received a Master’s degree in composition from The Juilliard School. Following Juilliard he began both scoring films and writing commissions for the concert hall, including works performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, New York Chamber Symphony, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.

KT Tunstall Readies KIN Release for September 9

KT Tunstall returns with an explosive 11 track collection of songs on her fifth studio album KIN to be released September 9th on Caroline Records.  Two years ago, KT Tunstall thought she was done with music: "As an artist I feel  like I died," she says. "I stopped. I gave up. I didn't want to do it anymore."  She put her stuff in storage and bought a little house in Venice Beach, California
and enrolled in the Sundance Institute's elite Film Composers Lab. It was a turning point in her life.

Two years later KIN was born. Produced by Tony Hoffer (Beck, Fitz and the Tantrums, Air, M83 and more), and written and recorded by KT in LA, it exemplifies the very best of guitar pop. "The truth is, I've finally made peace with being a pop songwriter," KT says.  "This record was very much embracing my dharma as an artist, which is to write positive songs that have muscle, but also show their vulnerability."

It has been over ten years since KT released her multi-platinum debut, Eye To The Telescope, and in KIN, KT sees its full bodied and blooded follow up. The album's new focused sound is exemplified by the teaser track 'Evil Eye'; a stripped back, primal rock 'n' roll track that seeded the whole record. The album's lead single  'Maybe It's A Good Thing' shows KT in top form: a moment in life captured in a bright, powerful pop song with an irresistible and unforgettable melody.  The diverse collection also includes a duet with KT fan James Bay, the raucous rebellion of 'It Took Me So Long To Get Here, But Here I Am', 'Run On Home', the call to armsof 'Hard Girls', and the beautiful album closer 'Love Is An Ocean'.

David Crosby Announces "Lighthouse" Album' s October Release

Today, David Crosby announces his new album Lighthouse, out on October 21st on GroundUP Music/Verve Label Group. The record is an intimate, stripped-down set that highlights Crosby’s instantly recognizable voice, incisive songwriting, and incomparable guitar work. The palpable joy in the 9-song collection captures the iconic artist in an unexpected burst of inspiration. “To create brand new music that I’m excited about is a pearl beyond price,” says the two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
Lighthouse features a rare economy of sound, filled primarily by Crosby’s voice and guitars, and Michael League of Snarky Puppy’s skillful production. There’s a sparse, unvarnished quality to the tracks that allows the songs breathing room and for the full emotional weight of the lyrics to emerge, unencumbered by extraneous instrumentation.

On album opener, “Things We Do For Love,” written for his wife of nearly 40-years Jan, Crosby’s vocals reflect a poetic tenderness. On “Paint You A Picture,” a cinematic tale of romantic regret co-written with Marc Cohn (“Walking In Memphis”), they are filled with remorseful resignation. The longtime social activist lands his political punches as he bitingly condemns the craven politicians who send other people’s children to war on “Somebody Other Than You,” and compassionately reminds us that we are all the same on “Look In Their Eyes,” a poignant tale about immigration inspired by the Syrian refugee crisis.
