Cameron Carpenter's All You Need is Bach, Out June 3

Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of Cameron Carpenter's new album All You Need is Bach available June 3, 2016. Bach's great keyboard masterpieces provide an ideal platform for
Carpenter's formidable creative gift and the seemingly limitless possibilities of his dream instrument;  his signature International Touring Organ (ITO).

Bach's complete organ music has been central to Carpenter's immense and multi-faceted repertoire. For his first all-Bach release, Carpenter has created a stimulating and wide-ranging program that reveals the scope of Bach's genius. Works included on the album are Contrapunctus IX from The Art of Fugue, Organ Sonatas in D minor and E-flat major, Prelude and Fugue in B minor, French Suite No. 1, Invention No. 8, the Chorale Prelude to "O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß" and, as a centerpiece, the great Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor.

The album title All You Need Is Bach not only refers to the immense popularity of Bach, but also to The Beatles' classic 1967 recording All You Need Is Love, where Bach's Invention No. 8 in F major rises out of the coda's collage-like texture.  In creating the ITO, the organ building team of Marshall & Ogletree apply sophisticated computer technology to digitally reproduce the sounds of many diverse American pipe organs without any of their mechanisms. Carpenter can access these sounds with unprecedented immediacy and flexibility. The ITO also draws upon the scientific findings relating in the field of historically informed performance practice. For example, Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue uses the Werckmeister III in a transposition centering the Werckmeister "sweet key" on C and the Trio Sonatas are presented in Kirnberger and Kellner temperaments in D and D#. While O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß and the Prelude and Fugue in B minor both feature equal temperament.

Most importantly, Carpenter's virtuosity, the musical potential of the International Touring Organ, and their meeting through the lens of the unique relationship between an instrument and its designer, allow him to delve unusually deep into Bach's emotional world.

The Barbara Kopple-directed Miss Sharon Jones!, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and screened at SXSW Film last year, will open a theatrical run July 29th following by a home video release in the fall.

Back in September 2015, Jones revealed that her cancer had returned, but the singer and her backing band continued to tour steadily even as she underwent chemotherapy. "I'm going to do what I have to do. I'm going to sing," the singer said at the premiere of Miss Sharon Jones! at TIFF, promising that her diagnosis won't prevent her from "giving the people what they want."

Bob Dylan's New "Fallen Angels" Album Receives Critical Raves

Bob Dylan's new album, Fallen Angels, is available now in CD and vinyl, released just a few
day's shy of his 75th birthday (May, 24).   Showcasing his singular interpretive artistry on twelve classic American songs,   Fallen Angels is the 37th studio album from Dylan and the first since last year's Shadows In The Night.  Produced by Jack Frost, Dylan's unique approach to recording the songs included refining complicated arrangements for 30-piece orchestras down to those uniquely tailored for his five-piece band.  The album can be found at Baker & Taylor's ordering platform for your library, school, store.

Critical response to Fallen Angels has been enthusiastic, with rave reviews coming in from around the globe;  Randy Lewis wrote in The Los Angeles Times, "[Dylan] immediately liberates songs from the big band/big orchestra world from which they emerged, and in which they are most frequently revisited…. [He] reaches to the blues at the core of many of these songs. Thus, they elicit the ache of romantic yearning and loss that often gets subsumed by swelling orchestral forces, background choirs or by singers who are more focused on crafting elegant vocals than finding emotional resonance.   And, Entertainment Weekly's Jim Farber opined, "Dylan alights on these words with a wry delicacy…Tellingly, he delivers these songs of love lost and cherished not with a burning passion but with the wistfulness of experience. They're memory songs now, intoned with a present sense of commitment….Standards likes these and Dylan's own songs now stand as equal American totems."

Iconic STRAWBS Revisit the USA

Strawbs have sold more records in the USA and Canada than anywhere.  In the USA the band had seven consecutive albums in the Billboard Top 200.  Their album, Hero & Heroine, was listed last year by Rolling Stone magazine as “one of the 50 greatest prog rock albums of all time".

And, founding member Dave Cousins has been described by All Music Guide as: “the most talented Dylan influenced songwriter to come out of England”. He previously released, in December of 2014,  his long awaited, and critically acclaimed, autobiography  Exorcising Ghosts: Strawbs and Other Lives (out via Omnibus Pr & Schirmer Trade Books).   It was listed by influential critic Richie Unterberger in his “Top 10 of 2014 rock books”.

Strawbs are often mentioned in the same breath as progressive rock bands like Yes, King Crimson, and The Moody Blues. It is well known that keyboardist Rick Wakeman left Strawbs for Yes. Rick was followed by Blue Weaver; who left Strawbs to join the Bee Gees, John Hawken; from the original
Renaissance, Don Airey; now with Deep Purple, Adam Wakeman, and Oliver Wakeman, who, like their dad, left Strawbs to join Yes!

The Strawbs emerged out of the British Folk Movement of the mid-1960s, starting their musical life as the Strawberry Hill Boys, playing bluegrass. They moved into the mainstream in 1967 by making the first Strawbs album, All

Lou Reed- The RCA & Arista Album Collection Arrives October 7

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, is proud to announce the much-anticipated release of Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection on Friday, October 7.  The definitive box set library of music recorded by the iconic American rock musician from 1972 to 1986, one of the richest and most protean periods of the artist's career, Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection is available now for pre-order.

Lou Reed - The RCA & Arista Album Collection brings together--for the first time in one comprehensive anthology—the 16 groundbreaking studio and live album titles written, recorded (and often produced) by Reed as a solo artist following the 1970 dissolution of the Velvet Underground, the profoundly influential avant-rock ensemble he'd founded in 1965.

"Our first date was a trip to the AES (Audio Engineering Society) convention. As wireheads Lou and I loved beautiful recordings and spent years making our studios, instruments and gear the best they could possibly be," said Laurie Anderson, American musician/composer/performance artist and Lou Reed's wife and partner for twenty-one years. "Lou put his heart into remastering these records. They are not smoothed out. Sometimes remastering revealed their details and roughness in the most exciting ways. They leap out at you with their original energy.

"I also love the rare images and the great selection of Lou's words about his music in this collection. Lou was a superb analyst and sharp critic and the interview excerpts bring back his crazy sense of humor, his generosity and his big view of the world and the meaning of music. Anyone who has loved Lou's music will be so happy to have this. I'm really grateful to Sony for putting this one out."

Each of the 16 albums (Lou Reed Live Take No Prisoners, from November 1978, fills 2CDs) in the 17CD library was newly remastered under Lou's direct personal supervision, a long-term project completed shortly before the artist's passing, at 71, on October 27, 2013.

OKKERVIL RIVER's Will Sheff Talks of "Away"

To announce the new Okkervil River album, and tour, a statement from  the band's Will Sheff:

The new Okkervil River album is called 'Away'. I didn't plan to make it and initially wasn't sure if it was going to be an Okkervil River album or if I'd ever put it out. I wrote the songs during a confusing time of transition in my personal and professional life and recorded them quickly with a brand new group of musicians. I got together the best New York players I could think of, people whose playing and personalities I was fans of and who came more out of a jazz or avant garde background, and we cut the songs live in one or two takes - trying to keep things as natural and immediate as possible - over three days in a studio on Long Island that hosts the Neve 8068 console which recorded Steely Dan's Aja and John Lennon's Double Fantasy. I asked Marissa Nadler to sing on it and got the composer Nathan Thatcher to write some beautiful orchestral arrangements, we recorded them with the classical ensemble and then I mixed the record with Jonathan Wilson out in Los Angeles.

2013-2015 had been a strange time for me. I lost some connections in a music industry that was visibly falling apart. Some members of the Okkervil River backing band left, moving on to family life or to their own projects. I spent a good deal of time sitting in hospice with my grandfather, who was my idol, while he died. I felt like I didn't know where I belonged. When there was trouble at home, a friend offered me her empty house in the Catskills where I could go and clear my head. New songs were coming fast up there, so I set myself the challenge of trying to write as many as possible as quickly as possible. I wasn't think about any kind of end product; the idea was just to write through what I was feeling, quickly and directly. Eventually, I realized I was writing a death story for a part of my life that had, buried inside of it, a path I could follow that might let me go somewhere new.

The Bangles's "Ladies And Gentlemen… The Bangles!" Out June 24

Hand-selected by the band members from their personal music, archives, Ladies and Gentlemen… The Bangles! is a 16-track collection of re-mastered ’80s-era rarities, demos, live recordings and more, including their debut single and all of the tracks from their self-titled EP ; produced by legendary Ramones/Blondie producer Craig Leon, unavailable since its initial release on vinyl in 1982.  The set will be out on Omnivore Recordings on June 24, 2016.

Encompassing the very first years of the band’s development, from their earliest days as The Bangs to their incarnation as The Bangles, this is the original line-up of Susanna Hoffs, Debbi Peterson, Vicki Peterson, and their first bass player, Annette Zilinskas. (Annette’s replacement, long time Bangles bassist Michael Steele appears on a couple of live tracks.)

“We’re so pleased to give our fans and music lovers alike the chance to enjoy the early fruits of our labor. Some of these tracks have never seen the light of day,” states drummer/singer Debbi Peterson.

“We’ve wanted to make these songs available to a new audience for a long time,” adds singer/guitarist Vicki Peterson. “We’ve thrown in a couple of live tracks, and even some of the first demos, all lovingly collected and re-mastered, so you no longer have to dig out a cassette player to hear them.”   Singer/guitarist Hoffs continues, “I feel a very special connection to our early recordings. The garage of my parents’ house was our musical laboratory, and we took all the flavors of our favorite bands and mixed up a concoction of jangly guitars, McCartney-inspired bass parts, grooves powered by punk energy, and harmonies galore! These songs and recordings were our musical manifesto — all that mattered and inspired us, fueled by youthful energy, hope and blind ambition.

U2 – iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE – Live In Paris, On DVD/BD

“The Paris show that concluded U2’s Innocence and Experience tour… was concert as personal memoir, archetypal story, prayer, exorcism and vow of unity.”—THE NEW YORK TIMES

U2 – iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE – Live In Paris will be released worldwide on Blu-ray and  DVD  on Friday 10th June on Interscope/Island.  The concert film captures the Irish band’s groundbreaking tour as it returned to the French capital for two very special shows in December last year—one of which was The New York Times’ Jon Pareles’ #1 concert of 2015—despite the fact that he was not in attendance, marking quite possibly the first time a TV broadcast topped the Times’ live shows of the year list.

In addition to the guest spots from Eagles of Death Metal and Patti Smith, U2 – iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE – Live In Paris puts viewers inside the AccorHotels Arena with Bono, Adam Clayton, The Edge and Larry Mullen Jr.: the deluxe versions of the release also include a behind-the-scenes interview with live broadcast director Hamish Hamilton; exclusive tour visuals narrated by the band’s lifelong friend Gavin Friday; music videos; additional live tracks filmed during the tour; and much more.

“Directing iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE was scary,” says live broadcast director Hamish Hamilton who previously worked with U2 on their 2001 Elevation Tour. “A technical nightmare married with a creative rollercoaster. It challenged everything I knew on so many levels…what blew my mind were the multiple narrative arcs combined with the number of emotional arcs you are taken through as you journey through the show. There’s a lot of good shows out there – but very few great shows.”

U2’s iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour kicked off in Vancouver in May 2015 and, to date, has played to over 1.2 million fans in 22 cities across Europe and North America. Staged in the round, the tour features multiple performance areas plus a state of the art 100 foot LED screen suspended above a 118 foot walkway running the length of the arena floor. Combined with an innovative suspended sound system, the tour has delivered mindblowing sound and visuals from every seat in every venue, as every night has seen “U2 reinvent the arena show”  wrote Rolling Stone.

Masterworks Broadway to Release "Paint Your Wagon" OCR

Masterworks Broadway will release the New York City Center Encores! cast recording of Lerner & Loewe's Paint Your Wagon starring Keith Carradine, Justin Guarini and Alexandra Socha, on May 27, 2016. Filled with gorgeous standards such as "They Call the Wind Maria," "I Talk to the Trees," and "Wand'rin' Star," Paint Your Wagon is Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's sweepingly ambitious and surprisingly realistic take on freedom, family, and racism in the Gold Rush-happy America of 1853.

The outstanding March 2015 production by Encores! brought the almost-forgotten show back to New York's mainstream stage for the first time since the original Broadway production closed in 1952. And because the original cast album; an early limited capacity monaural LP,  had omitted so much of the music, the score was ripe for rediscovery and a brand new recording. Helping to capture the spirit of the original Broadway production were the full handwritten scores used in 1951 by Franz Allers (Loewe's favorite musical director) and discovered accidentally by Rodgers & Hammerstein musicologist Bruce Pomahac at the bottom of a musty Warner Chappell trunk stored, curiously, at the R&H offices in New York.

Album co-producer and Encores! Music Director Rob Berman leads the thirty member cast and thirty-one piece Encores! Orchestra, in the 2015 stereo cast album that celebrates the scope and riches of Lerner & Loewe's exceptional score. Much of the original dance music orchestrated by Trude Rittmann, created in close collaboration with both Loewe and choreographer Agnes de Mille, appears on this recording for the first time. Also recorded for the first time on this album is the bonus track "What Do Other Folks Do?" which was dropped from the original production before the show reached New York and whose historical importance is clear: Lerner and Loewe would later recycle the concept for Camelot's "What Do the Simple Folk Do?"

Love & Friendship OST Releasing May 13

Sony Classical has announced the release of LOVE & FRIENDSHIP (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on CD, May 13. LOVE & FRIENDSHIP, writer-director Whit Stillman's adaptation of Jane Austen's Lady Susan, was the comedy hit of this year's Sundance and Rotterdam film festivals. The film arrives in theatres nationwide on May 13th 2016.

Set in the 1790s, earlier than most Austen tales, LOVE & FRIENDSHIP concerns beautiful young widow Lady Susan Vernon (Kate Beckinsale) who has come to Churchill, the estate of her in-laws, to wait out colourful rumours about her dalliances circulating through polite society. Whilst ensconced there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and for her daughter, Frederica, played by Morfydd Clark.

Chloë Sevigny, who starred with Beckinsale in Stillman's The Last Days of Disco (1998), plays Lady Susan's friend and confidante Alicia Johnson, with Stephen Fry as her husband, the "very Respectable" Mr. Johnson. The waters are troubled by the arrival at Churchill of the handsome, eligible Reginald DeCourcy (Xavier Samuel) and silly but cheerful -- and very rich -- Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett).

The Hollywood Reporter said, “The State of Marriage is an indispensable addition to the history of the marriage equality movement and a suspenseful nail-biter right up to the feel good ending.” From groundbreaking LGBT legal recognition for same sex couples in 2000, to becoming the first state to enact same sex marriage through a dramatic legislative vote in 2009, the film shows in a very personal way how, as HRC national field director Marty Rouse says, “Beth, Susan and Mary really changed the course of American history.”

Mudcrutch Returns With " 2 "

Mudcrutch's second album entitled “2″ is being released by Reprise Records on May 20th. The album is the follow up to the band’s 2008 eponymous debut which Rolling Stone called “a country-rock instant classic” in a rave four star review.  The band has also announced their first national tour, starting at Denver’s Ogden Theater on May 26th.

Los Angeles-based rock band The Shelters, who will release their debut album on Warner Bros. Records this summer, will support all tour dates.

Mudcrutch was initially formed in 1970 in Gainesville, Florida and is the precursor to the legendary Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Tom Petty (bass/vocals), Tom Leadon (guitar/vocals), Benmont Tench (keyboards/vocals), Mike Campbell (guitar/vocals), and Randall Marsh (drums/vocals) make up the band’s current line up. In 1974, Mudcrutch was signed to Shelter Records and moved to Los Angeles where they released one single, “Depot Street,” to very little fanfare. The band broke up in 1975 and could have settled for being a legend, but instead Mudcrutch rose from the ashes in 2008 to remind us that the golden age of rock and roll bands still had a few treasures to unearth. Their debut, made some thirty-three years later, was an unexpected hit.
