Shell Shocked and the Murder Capital of the USA

New Orleans is the murder capital of the United States. For the last decade, statistics have shown murder rates four to six times higher than the national average. Shell Shocked (releasing September 8, 2015 from Passion River) starts at the surface of New Orleans’ murder epidemic and delves
into the hearts and minds of those whose lives are most deeply impacted—the youth who live in fear of violence, the parents who grieve a wound that will never fully heal, and the mentors who are saving lives. The film lays out the big picture of a city plagued by violence; it will describe, in simplified terms, how children’s lives are shaped by family, schools, poverty, and a stressed criminal justice system; and, finally, move to solutions related to individual, community, and administrative choices.

Shell Shocked seeks to boil this situation down to its core: violence is causing unbearable loss, youth need to know that someone cares, and mentoring makes a difference. The film will argue, through the voices of those who are most invested, that this is NOT too complex a problem to address and fix. Though this story is grounded in New Orleans, several voices bridge the connection between New Orleans and other cities where long-term disenfranchisement and access to arms has become a common lethal combination. Shell Shocked is used as a tool to facilitate conversations about the causes and devastating impact of gun violence and to open paths for communication and change.

Tony Bennett Reveals "The Silver Lining : The Songs of Jerome Kern" Album

RPM/Columbia Records is proud to announce the release of The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern, a new album from American musical legend Tony Bennett and acclaimed jazz pianist Bill Charlap, arriving Friday, September 25, 2015.

Following the enormous success of his #1, Grammy-Award winning album with Lady Gaga, Cheek To Cheek, this new release continues the classic series of Tony Bennett album releases celebrating the essentials of the Great American Songbook. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is an appreciation of the genius of Jerome David Kern (1885-1945), one of the 20th century's most important American composers of musical theater and popular music.

Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern become parts of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977. Tony has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music. With his 90th birthday less than a year away, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern defines what makes Tony Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.

Over the course of his career, Kern composed more than 700 songs, creating musical elements used in more than 100 stage works, collaborating with the greatest lyricists and librettists of the era including P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg and many others on a seemingly limitless repertoire of classic songs including "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Long Ago and Far Away" and many more.

RENOWNED RACONTEUR KINKY FRIEDMAN TO RELEASE FIRST ALBUM OF NEW MUSIC IN 39 YEARS

Nobody could invent a character quite like Kinky Friedman, the stogie-waving, black-hat-wearing Texas Jewboy singer, storyteller, tequila purveyor, animal rescuer and full-time iconoclast. Though renowned for penning some of outlaw country’s most outrageous songs, authoring bestsellers and running for governor of Texas, his 45-year career includes touring with Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue; recording with Clapton, most of the Band and Ringo Starr; appearing on Saturday Night Live and at the Grand Ole Opry; and writing one of Nelson Mandela’s favorite songs. He also became the protagonist of his own crime novels, because even he couldn’t invent a character that could out-kink Kinky Friedman.

But what he hasn’t done in 39 years is record a new studio album. Friedman’s The Loneliest Man I Ever Met, releasing October 2 on Avenue A Records/Thirty Tigers, might be one of the longest-awaited follow-ups in recent memory. Not that fans have complained; the continued popularity of tunes such as “Sold American,” “Nashville Casualty and Life” and “Ride ’Em Jewboy” (the Holocaust-referencing song that soothed Mandela in prison) prove Kinky is that rare talent whose work withstands the test of time. Friedman still delivers those songs — interspersed with his inimitable blend of politically incorrect quips, jokes and tales Still, there were more sentiments he needed to express — his own and those of colleagues such as Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard and his pal Willie Nelson, who produced and performs on his own “Bloody Mary Morning.” The album’s opening song, which also features Willie’s sister, Bobbie, on piano and Kevin Smith on standup bass, is rendered as a spare duet, their traded lines punctuated with Nelson’s Spanish guitar-picking. Conveying both immediacy and intimacy, it sets the tone for the other 11 tracks, all produced by Brian Molnar and featuring guitarist Joe Cirotti, with harmonica by Willie’s Family Band mate Mickey Raphael and piano contributions by Little Jewford, Kinky’s sidekick since his first post-Peace Corps job — bandleader of the Texas Jewboys.

GEMMA BOVERY Arrives on DVD/Blu-ray September 1

GEMMA BOVERY is the clever, modern new film from acclaimed director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel), an adaptation of Posy Simmonds’ (Tamara Drewe) popular graphic novel of the same name, itself a contemporary re-working of Gustave Flaubert’s literary masterpiece Madame Bovary.

GEMMA BOVERY begins when earthy British beauty Gemma Bovery (Gemma Arterton, Tamara Drewe) and her husband Charlie (Jason Flemyng, X-Men: First Class) move to a charming old farmhouse in the very same Norman village where Flaubert’s classic was written a century earlier. Local baker and Flaubert expert Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini, Potiche) becomes entranced with Gemma—and it doesn't take long before he is drawing parallels between the literary and real-life women. Gemma catches the eye of a handsome local playboy (Niels Schneider, Chaos), and when her magnetic ex suddenly reappears, she seems to be fulfilling Joubert's worst fears that her destiny is linked to that of Flaubert’s doomed heroine.

At once a cheeky literary mash-up, a sensuous romance, a witty feminist commentary and a heady celebration of French provincial life, GEMMA BOVERY is highlighted by an outstanding performance from the increasingly popular Gemma Arterton. Director/co-writer Fontaine was thrilled to work with Gemma as she took on the role of Gemma.
