Director of Neil Simon Stage/Screen Works, Gene Saks, Dead at 93

Noted stage and screen director, Gene Saks, who helmed several Neil Simon plays on Broadway and
won three Tonys, for the Cy Coleman-Michael Stewart musical “I Love My Wife” along with Simon’s “Brighton Beach Memoirs” and “Biloxi Blues”, died Saturday at 93.  His wife, Keren, told the New York Times that he died from pneumonia in his East Hampton, NY home.  Saks directed seven feature films, all of them based on theatre works. The films included Simon adaptations “The Odd Couple,” “Barefoot in the Park,” “Last of the Red Hot Lovers” and “Brighton Beach Memoirs.” He also directed the 1969 “Cactus Flower,” which earned Goldie Hawn an Oscar for supporting actress. And, after directing the hit Broadway musical “Mame,” Saks did the big screen version in 1974. For the film, Lucille Ball played the title character, with many critics complaining that Angela Lansbury could repeat her Broadway triumph. Both the stage and screen versions of “Mame” co-starred Saks’ wife at the time,  Bea Arthur.

Saks started as a stage and TV actor and later did occasional roles in films and on TV, most memorable in his film bow with the 1965 film “A Thousand Clowns.” Later screen credits include the 1994 Paul Newman vehicle “Nobody’s Fool.”

Grantchester Arives on DVD / Blu-ray in April

PBS Distribution announced today it will release “MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!: GRANTCHESTER” on DVD and Blu-ray April 7, 2015.  “As a priest, isn’t everything our business?” asks Reverend Sidney Chambers as he gets to the bottom of another baffling murder around the placid village of Grantchester. James Norton (“Death Comes to Pemberley”) stars as the handsome, jazz-loving vicar, with Robson Green as his law-enforcement ally, Inspector Geordie Keating, in “GRANTCHESTER.”

Based on the acclaimed novel “Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death” by James Runcie, “GRANTCHESTER” hearkens back to a simpler England, when World War II had just ended, Elizabeth II was the new queen, and the local vicar was the pillar of the community.

Runcie styled Sidney after his late father, Lord Runcie, who was Archbishop of Canterbury in the 1980s. Like Sidney, the elder Runcie was a war hero before he entered the ministry, and he was a compassionate and amiable parish priest. Unfortunately, he never took up crime-solving. “GRANTCHESTER” corrects that oversight.

Also starring are Morven Christie (“Case Histories”) as Amanda Kendall, Sidney’s first love and soul mate; Tessa Peake-Jones (“Poirot”) as Mrs. Maguire, the vicar’s morally judgmental landlady; Al Weaver (“Sherlock”) as Leonard Finch, the church’s new assistant curate; and German actress Pheline Roggan as Hildegard Staunton, the strikingly beautiful widow of the series’ first victim.

Leonard Cohen Readies May "Can't Forget: A Souvenir of the Grand Tour" Live CD

Leonard Cohen to release Can't Forget: A Souvenir of the Grand Tour on May 12, 2015.  The ten
songs of this hypnotic album are Cohen rarities recorded on his recent, celebrated "Old Ideas World Tour."  Remarkably, this is Cohen's third album release since last September's Platinum selling
Popular Problems which garnered four 2015 JUNO AWARD nominations and won for the coveted 'Album of the Year'.

The songs on Can't Forget have the immediacy, spontaneity, and thrilling intimacy of the best studio recordings made in the white heat of live performance and Cohen's legendary soundchecks, in which he brings the colors of his virtuoso band to full bloom in harmony with his voice, never more seductive. Here is a full range of Leonard Cohen's work: new songs including, from the realm of blues, the wickedly funny "Got a Little Secret" and "Never Gave Nobody Trouble"; luxurious performances of such Cohen masterpieces as "I Can't Forget," "Light As the Breeze," "Night Comes On," and a sublime "Joan of Arc".

The Grip Weeds Announce April 7 CD Release of "How I Won the War"

In 1967 John Lennon starred in a cult film called "How I Won The War." In 1988, a pop/rock band from New Jersey derived their name from Lennon's character in the film, Musketeer Gripweed. In 2015, The Grip Weeds devised an album of the same name as the film that delivers on the promise of the film's lofty title.

Actually, "How I Won The War," is the sixth Grip Weeds studio album of new material, with more emotional depth and a greater plot than the film of the same name. Like any great piece of art, the themes explored by The Grip Weeds in this 'concept' album are universal, yet there is plenty of room for the listener to insert themselves into the proceedings.

Featuring vocal harmonies that would make CSNY envious and muscular musicality on par with The Who, "How I Won The War" (out April 7 on Jem Records) is the edgiest Grip Weeds album to date. There is no shortage of visceral stompers ("Rise Up", "Follow Me Blind"), but "How I Won The War" is no one trick pony. "Other Side Of Your Heart" is an acoustic-driven slice of modern psychedelia that early-era Pink Floyd fans are sure to enjoy. "Life Saver" is pure power pop with an introspective bent, while "Rainbow Quartz" and "Over And Over" take wistful looks back to budding relationships and salad days. The pounding groove of "Force Of Nature" alone will remind Mods young and old what attracted them to rock and roll in the first place.

Inherent Vice on DVD/BD on April 28

Inherent Vice, is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel. When private eye Doc Sportello's ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin…well, easy for her to say.

It's the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that love is another of those words going around at the moment, like trip or groovy, that's being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.
With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists... Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

The film stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix (The Master, Walk the Line), Josh Brolin (True Grit, No Country For Old Men) and Owen Wilson (The Royal Tennenbaums, Midnight in Paris); Katherine Waterston (Michael Clayton, Boardwalk Empire); Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) and Benicio Del Toro (Traffic); Martin Short (Frankenweenie); Jena Malone (The Hunger Games series); and musician Joanna Newsom. It releases on DVD and Blu-ray on April 28th.

Blackhat Set for Home Media Release

Michael Mann's Blackhat from Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will be released on Blu-ray and DVD for rental & library lending on June 9, 2015.  Blackhat tells the
story of a brilliant black hat hacker currently in Federal prison who is released and recruited by Federal law enforcement to stop a dangerous, global criminal network. After unanticipated consequences and assaults, he and his Chinese partner, who have become lovers, will go up against an overwhelming threat – on their own and isolated in Jakarta – as he tries to make a play to have a future.

Set inside the world of global cybercrime, Blackhat follows released convict Nicholas Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth, Rush, Snow White & the Huntsman.). In a not uncommon move, Federal law enforcement recruits a former blackhat hacker, currently in Federal Prison, to aid a war they will launch against a cyber criminal network, operating worldwide from an unknown base somewhere in Asia. It will take them from Los Angeles and Hong Kong to Perak, Malaysia and Jakarta. As Hathaway closes in, and as unanticipated consequences have made it all personal, he discovers the cyber sabotage of a Chinese nuclear power plant was just the beginning. Four-time Academy award nominated Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral) directs the heart-pounding, ripped from the headlines thriller.
