"ARLO GUTHRIE: ALICE’S RESTAURANT 50TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT out now on DVD by PBS Distribution

Out now, PBS Distribution released “ARLO GUTHRIE: ALICE’S RESTAURANT 50TH
ANNIVERSARY CONCERT” on DVD and Blu-ray. Fifty years ago, in 1965, Arlo Guthrie took out the trash following a “Thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat.” The hilarious account of actual events that precluded Arlo from military service in 1966 went on to become Alice’s Restaurant, a platinum-selling record in 1967, and a full-length motion picture in 1969. Today it’s as much a part of Thanksgiving tradition as cranberry sauce. For the first time in a decade, folk icon Arlo Guthrie brings The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree in its entirety to the stage.

The program is currently available on DVD and Blu-ray and has a run time of approximately 120 minutes. The DVD SRP is $24.99 and the Blu-ray SRP is $29.99.

In 1965, Arlo, the 18-year-old son of legendary musician Woody Guthrie, and his friend were spending Thanksgiving with Alice and Ray Brock at the couple’s home in a former church in the Berkshires. Alice asked the boys to take a load of trash to the town dump. When they arrived, they found that the dump was closed, so they threw the trash down a nearby hillside. Guthrie turned the story of his subsequent arrest, court appearance, and rejection from military service into “Alice’s Restaurant,” a musical monologue lasting over 18 minutes.

"We Come as Friends" Arrives on March 8 from BBC Home Entertainment

We Come As Friends is a modern odyssey ; a dizzying, almost science fiction-like journey into the
heart of Africa. At the moment when the Sudan, the continent’s biggest country, is being divided into two nations, an old “civilizing” ideology re-emerges – one of colonialism and  a clash of empires, with new episodes of bloody (and holy) wars over land and resources.

The Los Angeles Times says, “Filmmaker Hubert Sauper goes where other people don’t go, sees what the crowd doesn’t see and creates unsettling, provocative political documentaries that are unlike anyone else’s.”

Sauper takes us on a voyage in his tiny, self-made aircraft constructed from tin and canvas, leading us into the most improbable locations and into people’s thoughts and dreams in both stunning and heartbreaking ways. Chinese oil workers, UN peacekeepers, Sudanese warlords, and American evangelists ironically weave common ground in this documentary.

We Come As Friends made its theatrical premiere in August, 2015 and releases on DVD March 8, via BBC Home Entertainment.

Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" on DVD/BD March 1

PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing “IN DEFENSE OF FOOD” on DVD and Blu-ray. Join New York Times best-selling author Michael Pollan on a fascinating journey to answer the question: What should I eat to be healthy? Busting myths and misconceptions, the program reveals how common sense and old-fashioned wisdom can help us rediscover the pleasures of eating and at the same time reduce our risks of falling victim to diet-related diseases.

Pollan’s journey of discovery takes him from the plains of Tanzania, where one of the world’s last remaining tribes of hunter-gatherers still eats the way our ancestors did, to Loma Linda, California, where vegetarian Seventh Day Adventists enjoy remarkable longevity, and eventually to Paris, where the French diet, rooted in culture and tradition, proves surprisingly healthy. Along the way, he shows how a combination of faulty nutrition science and deceptive marketing practices have encouraged us to replace real food with scientifically engineered “food-like substances.” And he explains why the solution to our dietary woes is in fact remarkably simple: Eat Food. Not Too Much. Mostly Plants. “IN DEFENSE OF FOOD,” features interviews with scientists, nutrition experts, physicians, food activists and more, and includes the stories of real families.

“IN DEFENSE OF FOOD” will be available on DVD and Blu-ray March 1, 2016. The run time of the program is approximately 120 minutes. The SRP for the DVD is $24.99 and $29.99 for Blu-ray. The program will also be available for digital download.

Almost every day there’s a new headline about food. Eat more fiber. Drink less milk. Eggs are bad. Eggs are good. No wonder people are confused. The program begins with an exploration of the kind of food most Americans eat today — known as the Western diet. It includes lots of meat, white flour, sugar and vegetable oils. It’s cheap, convenient and has been processed to taste really good. But the effects of the Western diet on health are not so tasty, including alarming increases in obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

PBS To Release "American Experience : The Perfect Crime" on DVD in March

PBS Distribution announced today it will release“AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: THE PERFECT CRIME” on DVD. In 1924, the murder of a 14-year-old boy by two wealthy college students shocked the nation. But more horrifying than the brutal killing — the boy was bludgeoned to death — was the motive. Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb admitted they planned to abduct and kill a child at random simply for the thrill of it. Legendary defense attorney Clarence Darrow summoned experts to show that the murderers had been shaped by childhood trauma and that it was society and its barbaric death penalty that deserved to be put on trial. Set in 1920s Chicago — a city of gin joints, gangsters, and political corruption — The Perfect Crime tells a story that set off a national debate about morality, individual responsibility, and capital punishment.

“AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: THE PERFECT CRIME” will be available on DVD March 22, 2016. The DVD run time is 60 minutes and the SRP is $24.99. The program will also be available for digital download.

Soon after a pair of eyeglasses found at the crime scene linked them to the murder, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb confessed to the killing. The prosecutor was convinced he had an open-and-shut case — a premeditated murder carried out in cold blood. He vowed that justice would come in the form of the death penalty. Suddenly, Leopold and Loeb were splashed across the front pages and the horror of the murder began to pale before the specter of the murderers: two arrogant young men in stylish suits, smoking cigarettes and chatting blithely with reporters about their killing of Bobby Franks.

Carol Arrives in March from Anchor Bay

Anchor Bay Entertainment and The Weinstein Company are proud to announce the home entertainment release of CAROL—one of the most critically acclaimed films of 2015, from director Todd Haynes and starring Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett and Academy Award nominee Rooney Mara.

Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s seminal novel The Price of Salt, CAROL follows two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair in 1950s New York. As conventional norms of the time challenge their undeniable attraction, an honest story emerges to reveal the resilience of the heart in the face of change. A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara), is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol (Cate Blanchett), an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband (Kyle Chandler) begins to question her competence as a mother as her involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby (Sarah Paulson) come to light.

Living up to its groundbreaking source material, the film premiered to a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival—and won the festivals’ Queer Palm award. Since this auspicious debut, it has continued to collect both adoration and accolades. The Academy Awards honored the film with six nominations, including Actress in a Leading Role for Cate Blanchett and Actress in a Supporting Role for Rooney Mara. "Censured Voices" Get March 15 DVD Release

The historical Six-Day War of 1967, wherein Israel launched a preemptive strike against the Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian troops amassed on its borders, is revisited and reconsidered in Mor Loushy’s extraordinary historical chronicle CENSORED VOICES, available on DVD March 15, 2016.

With its decisive victory over just a few short days, Israel nearly tripled its size with its newly occupied lands and, brimming with relief, joy and pride, a new national narrative of manifest destiny emerged. But drowned out by the euphoria, other voices—many of those who fought in the war—had something different to say. It is those voices that are heard in CENSORED VOICES.

One week after the Israeli-Arab conflict, Amos Oz (soon to be a celebrated author) and editor Avraham Shapira arranged to record conversations with returning soldiers about their experiences on the brief battlefield. These intensely candid interviews capture the young men wrestling with the question of the responsibility of the conqueror to the conquered (even when the shoe could easily have been on the other foot), the paradox of a people who fled oppression who must now oppress to preserve their security, and the still fervent hope for a lasting peace with their Arab neighbors.

Music Box Films Sets a March 1 DVD Release Date for FLOWERS

FLOWERS is an intensely poetic meditation on love, pain and memory, all expressed through the
metaphor of cut flowers, a typically simple gesture here charged with emotion Directed and co-written by Spain’s Jose Mari Goenaga and Jon Garaño, its themes are reflected through the unexpected reverberations of a tragedy that impacts three women very differently, while examining the all-too-human feelings associated with romance, loss, remembrance and missed connections.

Ane (Nagore Aranburu) lives a quietly unfulfilled life, trapped in a seemingly loveless marriage, until she suddenly begins to receive bouquets of flowers anonymously, once a week. Meanwhile, Tere (Itziar Aizpuru) wants nothing more than a grandchild, but her only son Beñat (Josean Bengoetxea) and his wife Lourdes (Itziar Ituño) have other plans. A sudden, tragic event jolts all of their lives into a new reality, and flowers start to appear anonymously once again, but this time, instead of passion, they represent an emotional memory.

“We live surrounded by flowers. Flowers at weddings, and at funerals, flowers on the table, flowers on walls, in a garden, or by the road. It’s as if we’re constantly turning to their image to say what often can’t be expressed in words. Few images serve to convey such a large variety of things. Depending on the context in which they’re given, the meaning of these flowers can change dramatically. And depending upon who sees them, or who receives them, the meaning can also differ,” offer filmmakers Jon Garaño and Jose Mari Goenaga. “FLOWERS arose from this ambiguity and these possible meanings. We found it interesting to explore how something like a bunch of flowers, at first so stripped of meaning, can become the clearest of messages.”
