Shell Shocked and the Murder Capital of the USA

New Orleans is the murder capital of the United States. For the last decade, statistics have shown murder rates four to six times higher than the national average. Shell Shocked (releasing September 8, 2015 from Passion River) starts at the surface of New Orleans’ murder epidemic and delves
into the hearts and minds of those whose lives are most deeply impacted—the youth who live in fear of violence, the parents who grieve a wound that will never fully heal, and the mentors who are saving lives. The film lays out the big picture of a city plagued by violence; it will describe, in simplified terms, how children’s lives are shaped by family, schools, poverty, and a stressed criminal justice system; and, finally, move to solutions related to individual, community, and administrative choices.

Shell Shocked seeks to boil this situation down to its core: violence is causing unbearable loss, youth need to know that someone cares, and mentoring makes a difference. The film will argue, through the voices of those who are most invested, that this is NOT too complex a problem to address and fix. Though this story is grounded in New Orleans, several voices bridge the connection between New Orleans and other cities where long-term disenfranchisement and access to arms has become a common lethal combination. Shell Shocked is used as a tool to facilitate conversations about the causes and devastating impact of gun violence and to open paths for communication and change.

GEMMA BOVERY Arrives on DVD/Blu-ray September 1

GEMMA BOVERY is the clever, modern new film from acclaimed director Anne Fontaine (Coco Before Chanel), an adaptation of Posy Simmonds’ (Tamara Drewe) popular graphic novel of the same name, itself a contemporary re-working of Gustave Flaubert’s literary masterpiece Madame Bovary.

GEMMA BOVERY begins when earthy British beauty Gemma Bovery (Gemma Arterton, Tamara Drewe) and her husband Charlie (Jason Flemyng, X-Men: First Class) move to a charming old farmhouse in the very same Norman village where Flaubert’s classic was written a century earlier. Local baker and Flaubert expert Martin Joubert (Fabrice Luchini, Potiche) becomes entranced with Gemma—and it doesn't take long before he is drawing parallels between the literary and real-life women. Gemma catches the eye of a handsome local playboy (Niels Schneider, Chaos), and when her magnetic ex suddenly reappears, she seems to be fulfilling Joubert's worst fears that her destiny is linked to that of Flaubert’s doomed heroine.

At once a cheeky literary mash-up, a sensuous romance, a witty feminist commentary and a heady celebration of French provincial life, GEMMA BOVERY is highlighted by an outstanding performance from the increasingly popular Gemma Arterton. Director/co-writer Fontaine was thrilled to work with Gemma as she took on the role of Gemma.

UNFRIENDED Makes Its Way to DVD/BD

For a group of teenage friends, a devastating fate lurks on the other side of a computer screen in Unfriended, the first in a new generation of found-footage thrillers coming to DVD and Blu-Ray, September 8, 2015, from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment for public libraries and "rental" retailers due to Uni's 28 day holdback policy.  Unfriended is a startlingly contemporary nail-biter from two modern masters of mayhem, executive producer Jason Blum (The Purge, Ouija, Sinister) and producer Timur Bekmambetov (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Wanted).

What starts as a seemingly innocent online prank produces a sequence of events that spirals out of control. During a routine group video chat, high-school friends are terrorized by an unseen figure. The anonymous intruder implicates each of them in the death of an acquaintance, revealing damning secrets and transforming trusted allies into wary adversaries. Forced into a sordid "game," the teens try to figure out who is behind the mysterious threat, but all signs point to a power from beyond the grave. Playing out in real time almost entirely on a computer screen, Unfriended features a rising young cast that includes Shelley Hennig (Ouija, "Teen Wolf"), Moses Storm ("The 4 to 9ers: The Day Crew," "About a Boy") and Renee Olstead ("The Secret Life of the American Teenager," "Still Standing").
