Marco Beltrami is best known for finding a unique approach to scoring in each of his films. For the film Scream, he threw away conventional horror music clichés and instead called upon his concert music roots to explore a new sonic landscape. For The Homesman Beltrami constructed his own instruments that would meld the archaic and new. The creations were as tiny as a refitted lap steel guitar to giant, cross-ranch cables that could pick up wind and translate it into a haunting glow. Subsequently, his resume has expanded to include films ranging from epic drama to dark comedy. Beltrami has been nominated twice for Academy Awards® for Best Score (3:10 to Yuma (2007) and The Hurt Locker (2008)).
About his work on Ben-Hur, Beltrami says: “One of the fun things about working on Ben Hur was that I took ancient Greek and Roman instruments such as lyres, aulos, citira, tartold, and salpinx and processed them electronically to give the score a modern feel. We also had a traditional orchestra to give the score some scope, so overall it provides a unique emotional undercurrent to the story!"
Ben-Hur is the epic story of Judah Ben-Hur (Jack Huston), a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title, separated from his family and the woman he loves (Nazanin Boniadi), Judah is forced into slavery. After years at sea, Judah returns to his homeland to seek revenge, but finds redemption. Based on Lew Wallace’s timeless novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. The film also stars Rodrigo Santoro, Nazanin Boniadi, Ayelet Zurer, Pilou Asbaek, Sofia Black D’Elia and Morgan Freeman.
Timur Bekmambetov directed the film from a screenplay by Keith Clarke and John Ridley. Sean Daniel, Joni Levin, and Duncan Henderson served as producers, with Mark Burnett, Roma Downey, Keith Clarke, John Ridley, and Jason F. Brown serving as executive producers.
Opened in theatres nationwide on August 19, 2016, Ben-Hur, is a presentation of Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures. Rated PG-13.
