PIXELS Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will release on CD July 24, 2015. The album features the original music composed by Henry Jackman (BIG HERO 6, CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER). “I think everyone involved with this movie has a great love for the great summer action-comedies of the 1980s,” said Executive Producer Michael Barnathan. “We definitely wanted a movie
for today’s audiences, but our goal was also to capture something of the feel that made those movies so special – that mix of action and comedy that the movies of that era did so well.”
“It feels like it could have been made in the 80s,” said Jackman, who chose not to score Pixels comedically because, “the comedy in the film speaks for itself.” Henry Jackman worked with a 40-voice choir, live percussion with five players, and a full orchestra of 75 members to create the Pixels score.
The film’s composer Henry Jackman grew up in the southeast of England, where he began composing his first symphony at the age of six. He studied classical music at Oxford and sang in the St. Paul’s Cathedral Choir. Henry quickly got involved in the underground rave scene and began producing popular electronica music and dance remixes, eventually working with artists such as Seal and The Art of Noise. Jackman has established himself as one of today’s top composers by fusing his classical training and his experience as successful record producer and creator of electronic music. His musical versatility ratcheted up the tension in Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips (earning him a BAFTA nomination). Henry super-powered comic book hits such as X-Men: First Class and Captain America: Winter Soldier and breathed life into legendary animated characters like Winnie the Pooh, Puss in Boots and new classics like Wreck-It Ralph and Oscar-winner Big Hero 6. Other Henry Jackman films include Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kick-Ass.
As kids in the 1980s, Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), Will Cooper (Kevin James), Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and Eddie "The Fire Blaster" Plant (Peter Dinklage) saved the world thousands of times – at 25 cents a game in the video arcades. Now, they’re going to have to do it for real. In PIXELS, when intergalactic aliens discover video feeds of classic arcade games and misinterpret them as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth, using the video games as the models for their assaults – and now-U.S. President Cooper must call on his old-school arcade friends to save the world from being destroyed by PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, and Space Invaders. Joining them is Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten (Michelle Monaghan), a specialist supplying the arcaders with unique weapons to fight the aliens.
“The alien invasion cues sound more sophisticated,” Jackman described. “It almost feels like something you would hear on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, not the action scores of today. PIXELS makes for a modern refreshing take of a classic entertainment film.”
Sony Pictures presents PIXELS, in theatres on July 24, 2015. Varèse Sarabande will release the PIXELS – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on CD July 24, 2015.
